Today in Golf – Jon Rahm Assends to World No. 1 with Victory at Genesis, Tiger Woods Disappoints in Sluggish Final Round and more

Rahm re-ascends to the quintessential throne with a spectacular victory at Riviera!

On Sunday, Jon Rahm secured the top spot in the world rankings with a victorious performance in golf at the Genesis Invitational.

At Riviera, Jon Rahm faced hometown favorite Max Homa in a battle and made two key moments: a 45-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the par-3 14th, followed by a tee shot to 2 feet for birdie on the par-3 16th.

He ended with a score of 2-under 69, winning by a two-stroke margin over Homa.

“Pretty incredible,” Rahm said. “[To win] at a golf course with this legacy, this history, and hosted by Tiger Woods, is such an honor.”

“I don’t need a ranking to validate anything,” Rahm said. “Having the best season of my life, and hopefully, I can keep it going.”

Tiger Woods scored +2 in the final round at the Genesis Invitational.

Tiger Woods did not have enough energy to sustain his performance in the final round of the Genesis Invitational on Sunday, his first tournament in seven months.

Woods electrified fans at Riviera Country Club with a 67 in the third round. He started the final round with a birdie, followed by two more on the back nine. Unfortunately, five bogeys and little else hampered him, leading to a 73 and ending his tournament at 1-over for tied 45th place.

“It was progress, but obviously I didn’t win,” Woods said. “My streak continues here at Riv. No, I felt like the first couple of days I left certainly a lot of shots out there with some putts, especially Friday when I was blocking everything. Yesterday was better. Still wish I could have gotten within a touch of the leaders, but today they’re running away with it.”

LIV Golf secures two PGA Tour stars – including the world No. 34! Let the new season begin!

LIV Golf is bringing in three new players for its upcoming season, one of which will be a higher-ranked pro than your average.

ESPN recently reported that Thomas Pieters, Brendan Steele, and Danny Lee are the latest additions to the Saudi-supported series, LIV. Pieters has the fourth highest ranking of those signed following Cameron Smith (No.4), Joaquin Niemann (No.23), and Abraham Ancer (No.27). Although the series does not yet have world-ranking points of its own, its player’s rankings have seen a decline.

Sad to miss my favorite tournament of the year. Because well as #34 in world, I just couldn’t get in @PGATOUR. 🤷🏻‍♂️ #GenesisInvitational
