2022 World Wide Technology Championship: Details, Picks, Predictions, Odds

This week the PGA Tour takes us to the El Camaleaon Golf Club at Playa del Carmen. The World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba was the first PGA Tour event held in Mexico this century when it started in 2007.

Like last week’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship, this week’s World Wide Technology Golf Tournament will be played on a short course in a warm climate where birdies will abound.

Unlike last week’s competition, this one has some big-name competitors who will likely tip the odds in their favor.

Victor Hovland has a chance to become the first golfer since Steve Stricker (John Deere Classic 2009-11) to complete the hat trick and win the same tournament for three straight years. If Hovland wants to win, he has to beat several serious competitors. Among the experienced players hoping to dethrrone Hovland and win this year’s World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba are Scottie Scheffler (US), Tony Finau (US), Collin Morikawa (US) and Jason Day (Aus). This week’s tournament has a purse of $8.2 million and the winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup Points. There will be no LIV Golf tournament this week to compete with the PGA Tour event as the finale took place last week in the LIV Golf Team Championship with Dustin Johnson’s team taking the victory.

World Wide Technology Championship – Notable Odds

Viktor Hovland (+950)

It’s not surprising to see Viktor Hovland not be the overall betting favorite here given his two consecutive wins at this event. He shot a course record cumulative stroke count of 261 (-23), which was good enough for him to win by four strokes over Carlos Oríz last year. He very nearly matched an 18-hole course record by scoring a 62 in the third round.

Hovland is currently ranked 11th in the OWGR and has played well so far this season. He finished T5 at the ZOZO Championship and T21 at the CJ Cup.

Collin Morikawa (+1600)

There are several reasons why I think he’s good for this week. His elite iron play should fit well into this golfing event, as he was third in stroke gain on approach shots last year and has been 10th after two poor performances in this one.

He has no experience playing at this venue. This is often viewed as a negative, but I see it as his last ditch effort to really step it up in the early half of this season.

He’s one of my players who I’ve been hoping would finally get a win. And he knows that he doesn’t have many more chances to get a win before the end of the 2022 calendar year.

Tony Finau (+1400)

Finau won two consecutive tournaments in late July last season before a 9th place finish at the TOUR Championship. He returns on Thursday at a course that has many mixed emotions for him. Finau shot two consecutive 70s over the weekend to finish T45 last year, he had a top 10 finish at T8 in 2020, missed the cut in 2019, and in 2018 he landed T16.

Adam Long (+7000)

Long has gone from T-2 to T-3 to T-22 at Mayakoba the last three years, so he’s come pretty close to winning here before. He didn’t make the cut in his first start of the season and then finished T30 at the Sanderson Farm Championship. He currently sits 2nd on tour in SG: PUTTING, but his iron play leaves a lot to be desired.
